The Smith Family is a national, independent, social enterprise that supports disadvantaged Australian children to create a better future through education. The Smith Family works to unlock opportunities for financially disadvantaged children and their families by promoting education and so creating the opportunity for disadvantaged families to participate more fully in society.

It was Christmas in 1922 that The Smith Family began. Five Australian businessmen while returning from a trip were debating whether everyone was enjoying the Christmas spirit. They believed that all children should be able to join in at Christmas so they went to an orphanage and gave them toys and sweets. They were happy to do this anonymously and when the matron asked them their names so that the children could write a letter of thanks, one of the men replied:"Er .. Smith.""What about the others?" asked the matron."They're Smiths too," replied the man "We're all Smiths. We're The Smith Family…"And so The Smith Family came into existence.

Throughout the past 80 years, The Smith Family has continued to review the needs of disadvantaged children and families and responded accordingly. Today the focus is on providing financial support for the education needs of disadvantaged families as well as support for Indigenous Australians through education and community based initiatives.

"Woolworths shares The Smith Family's passion for supporting disadvantaged Australian families and ensuring that their children have every opportunity to reach their full potential.

Since December 2004, Woolworths raised more than $500,000 through the sale of Smith Family Christmas merchandise and floral bouquets. Woolworths volunteers have also helped to pack and deliver thousands of toys and food hampers for families in need at Christmas. Woolworths also donates canned food items from its Select range for the 15,000 food hampers that were packed and delivered by Christmas. The generous support of Woolworths touches the lives of thousands of struggling Australian families — not only at Christmas, but throughout the year — by ensuring that their children have access to a decent education. This truly is the best gift of all, as it gives these children hope for a brighter future."
