Meghanne
A 12 year old dare-devil bungy jumping girl, Meghanne was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis at 3 weeks old. She visits the Hospital every 4-6 weeks to attend the CF Clinic for Kids. When younger Meggie spent time in the Hospital with infections but now the CF Clinic tries to treat these at home with their Home IV program. In addition Clinic nurses sometimes visit her at home.
One in 25 people (almost one million Australians) carry the Gene for CF. In Australia a child is born with CF every 4 days. Cystic Fibrosis causes mucus in the lungs to be thick and sticky, blocking air passages and causing repeated lung infections and difficulty in breathing. Even with expert care and attention, 60% of children with CF aged 5 years and up will spend at least 2 weeks in hospital every year. There is no cure for CF.
Meghanne's favourtie thing about the Hospital is the staff because they are kind and helpful. She very much likes that everyone is friendly.
She loves to play sport & be active because she has lots of energy, it also helps with her CF condition to be as active as possible. Meggie plays netball for her school, basketball every week, swims every week, and also dances twice a week for 4 hours. She has a trampoline at home for her spare time. She does physiotherapy for her lungs twice a day and also takes about 40 enzymes a day with her food. The rest of her treatment changes from time to time and is set by the Clinic. Phew I'm exhausted, how about you?!?!?
With 2 brothers Alec 19, David 17, Meggie loves her food, she says she like to 'taste test'. She and her family like to go on holidays together and have lots of fun
Family and friends are extremely important to Meghanne; she likes hanging out with her friends because they make her laugh. If granted one wish it would be that everyone had at least one special friend. If she could change one thing in the world it would be that people get on and are happy with each other.
Meghanne is looking forward to being a Hero because the Hospital has done so much for her, she just wants to do something back to help. To the Woolies team she says 'thank you for giving me this opportunity, I would like to help everyone in every way.'
To the Hospital team, she says 'thank you for looking after me these past 12 years and for nominating me as a Hero, I hope I do a good job!' |
