Quinoa customer information sheet

Quinoa (pronounced Keen-wa) is a grain-like crop closely related to the spinach and beet family, and native to the Andean regions of South America.  Macro Organic Quinoa is sourced from the Andean Mountains in Peru and Bolivia. Although not technically a true cereal grain, quinoa is grouped with other cereals because it is nutritionally similar and can be used in many of the same ways as other cereals. Quinoa is easy to prepare and has a slightly nutty flavour and firm texture.

All Macro Organic products, including our quinoa, are free from synthetic pesticides and other chemicals (Certified by Australian Certified Organic (ACO)).

Quinoa is a relatively new food ingredient in Australia and NZ. Like all new foods, some customers may find that they are sensitive to quinoa, particularly when preparing it for the first time.

If you experience any sensitivity or intolerance to quinoa, please seek advice from your doctor and contact Woolworths on 1300 767 969. Alternatively, if you are concerned about food allergies or intolerances, contact your States Allergy Unit for more information.

Quinoa has similar nutritional properties to wholegrain cereals, and is therefore defined as a wholegrain. It is also a source of fibre, and can be eaten as a rice replacement to accompany meals and salads, or as a hot breakfast cereal when boiled in water.  It is also a good complement to legumes.

The outside layer of the quinoa seed contains saponins which act as a natural insecticide or defence mechanism for the Quinoa.  This saponin layer may impart a bitter taste and may cause foaming when cooked* and some consumers may be sensitive to these compounds. Macro Organic Quiona has gone through a pre-wash step by agitating the outer husk and washing the Quinoa to reduce the levels of saponin.  However, we suggest customers should rinse and soak the seed before use.  Please see instructions below:

  1. Rinse well under cold running water
  2. Soak in cold water for 20 mins
  3. Rinse well under cold running water
  4. In a saucepan add 1 part grain to 2 parts water (1 cup of dry Quinoa produces approximately 4 cups of cooked Quinoa)
  5. Bring mixture to boil, reduce the heat to a simmer and cover for 15 minutes.  Drain any remaining liquid and then serve.

In relation to our product quality and food safety, particularly for all Own Brand products sourced from overseas suppliers; all suppliers are subjected to the same externally audited food safety requirements, and must achieve our WQA (Woolworths Quality Assurance) certification in order to supply to our business. The WQA certification ensures that microbiological and chemical analysis occurs, contaminants and heavy metals are tested for, hygienic manufacturing practices are in place, process control is implemented at all times and foreign object detection is being used, just to name a few.

All Products we sell are required to meet the Australian Food Standards Code requirements for all aspects at all times. Products are regularly checked by the manufacturer in relation to our set specification parameters along with our own internal Quality department conducting regular conformance testing on the products to ensure the product meets our required quality and food safety parameters and to ensure compliance to the code.

Our stringent quality requirements set within our WQA (Woolworths Quality Assurance) Program are enforced, so we can ensure that only products of the highest quality and food safety standards are able to be packaged under any of our Own Label brands.
