Visa & MasterCard Debit Card Credit Option

We are pleased to announce the good news that customers now have the option to again press 'credit' when using your Visa or MasterCard Debit card.

Customers can now pay the way they want when shopping at Woolworths and Safeway supermarkets, BIG W, BWS, Dan Murphy’s, Dick Smith, Thomas Dux and Caltex Woolworths petrol outlets.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused in the past, and hope that putting this into place will make it easier for our customers to shop with us, however they decide to pay.

Frequently asked questions

Q.   Why has Woolworths turned the “Credit” option on Debit Cards back on?

A.   Woolworths initially removed the “CR” option due to the high cost of processing these transactions. We have successfully negotiated new commercial terms with Visa, MasterCard and the banks that reduce bank fees on these transactions.  As a result, we can once again offer customers the ability to select “CR”.

Q.   Will this change impact my Credit Card?

A.   NO. Only Visa and MasterCard ‘Debit Card’ holders are impacted by this change

Q.   Do I still need to authorise the transaction using my PIN?

A.   You can authorise transactions using signature or PIN when selecting the “Credit” option. However, if you select Cheque or Saving, a PIN is mandatory as required by the banks.

Q.   Is pressing Cheque “CHQ” or Saving “SAV” less secure than pressing Credit “CR”?

A.   The security of our equipment has not changed. All transactions continue to be electronically authorised by your financial institution.  A transaction which is authorised using a PIN remains the safest method and is how all transactions in Australia will eventually be processed.

Q.   Will re-introducing this option cause any additional charges or increase the price of groceries?

A.   Prices will not increase as a direct result of switching 'credit' on for Visa and MasterCard Debit card users.
