Woolworths speeds up checkout time with optional receipts

Wednesday, 25 May 2011

Optional receipts for transactions under $30 will be rolled out from today at both self-serve and attended checkouts in over 830 Woolworths supermarkets across the country over the next two weeks.

Greg Foran, Director of Woolworths Supermarkets, said, “We recently completed a month long trial of optional receipts in 16 Woolworths supermarkets. Customers at these supermarkets embraced the change with 48 per cent declining a receipt at checkouts and 57 per cent opting for no receipt at self-serve.

“We have introduced this option to both improve our customers’ experience at the checkout and to reduce paper waste. During our trial, each store saved an average of 8 hours of customer time spent at the checkout and over 2kms of receipt paper per week.

“Every little bit of time we can save our customers at the checkout is important. It may not seem like it takes a long time to print out a receipt but if you consider the millions of customers we serve everyday we expect this change to reduce time spent waiting by more than 400 hours each year in every supermarket.

. “We have also been working hard behind the scenes to improve IT systems at our self-serve checkouts. Over the past six months we have delivered several initiatives resulting in a 68 per cent reduction in the number of supervisor interventions, which is also great news for customers.

“When you’re running into the supermarket to grab those last minute items, you want to be in and out fast. So we feel that the ability to decline a receipt plus recent IT improvements will help our customers to move through checkouts that little bit faster,” said Mr Foran.

This follows the recent launch of the Woolworths Fresh Guarantee, where customers can returnany fruit or veg items that they are not happy with without a receipt.

Woolworths Limited will continue to roll out this initiative to other brands over coming months, including BIG W, BWS and Dan Murphy’s.
