R & R Smith
Andrew Smith ‐ Grower & Business Manager
When William Smith planted apple trees in the Huon Valley in 1888, he couldn't have imagined becoming one of the founders of apple orcharding in Tasmania. Well over 100 years and four family generations later, the business is run by William's great grandson, Andrew Smith.
Andrew's passion for growing started when he was travelling in Europe 20 years ago. He was strongly influenced by a Dutch fruit advisor named Jan Houter, who became his friend and mentor. Andrew happily admits that he taught him an enormous amount about fruit production... and about life!
As a former international sailor, Andrew clearly enjoys the thrill of competition. However, he's more than happy to help the younger generation looking to become farmers. His advice is simple: "Look for a point of difference with your product and work from the market back when deciding what to grow."
Above all else, he enjoys the massive challenge of harvesting quality, organic fruit. When asked how he prepares for the season ahead, he replied: "Growing apples is like having one hand tied behind your back. Growing organic apples is like having two hands tied behind your back. You cannot prepare!"
"The thing to remember about running a business is that it's never as good as you think. The good news is, it`s never as bad as you think either." ‐ Andrew Smith
The main R&R Smith orchard is located at the Northern End of the Huon Valley, Tasmania, tucked under a mountain range called Sleeping Beauty. Winters can be cold with an occasional snowfall, while summers are hot and protected from sea breezes.
The Huon Valley orchard (originally an apple‐only orchard), began growing cherries in 2008. R&R Smith also supply Woolworths with organic plums and pears, from an orchard in WA. Growing a wide range of seasonal fruit means that supply continues throughout the year.
R&R Smith has been supplying Woolworths with fresh, organic produce since 2006. Demand has continued to grow significantly year on year. 2012 was a record year, with 80% of fruit from R&R Smith being supplied straight from their original, Huon Valley Orchard.
In growing their business to meet consumer demands, R&R Smith has been careful to maintain the high standards for which they have become known. In addition to being organic certified and independently audited on a regular basis, Andrew Smith acknowledges the stringent quality control procedures that take place once his fruit arrives at Woolworths.
"As Quality Assurance at Woolworths is very rigid, produce does not make the shelf unless it's the best." ‐ Andrew Smith
When he's not busy in the orchards, Andrew loves working on his evolving cider business. His favourite recipe uses baked Fuji apples ‐ although he also insists you can't beat them as a tasty snack on their own. And the best place to store apples? "In the fridge with your beer!"
