WA Container Deposit Scheme

At Woolworths, we are committed to providing great value on your weekly shop. From 1 July 2026, Western Australia’s Container Deposit Scheme (CDS) expanded to include a wider range of beverage containers such as glass wine and spirit bottles, casks, flavoured milk, juice, cordial, and sachets (up to 3L).

As a result, prices on eligible products will be adjusted to incorporate the new scheme fees. These costs are a direct requirement of the legislative expansion and are applied specifically to support WA’s recycling and environmental goals.

Customers can obtain a 10 cent refund for every eligible bottle, can or carton returned to a designated refund point throughout the State.

From 1 July 2026, our shelf prices increased to include these new fees. Consequently, our red offers and yellow promotions are now calculated based on these new shelf prices. Any price reductions will be shown against the updated retail prices.

Following Western Australia’s recent Containers for Change scheme expansion, the list of excluded items has shrunk to include almost all beverage containers between 150ml and 3L. All eligible containers will have a label on the container, which will mean, provided that it is in good condition (uncrushed, empty and with the label and barcode intact), it can be returned to a designated refund point in Western Australia.

Following the recent scheme expansion, containers designed strictly for at-home food preparation or daily dietary use remain ineligible. The only items that are strictly excluded from a 10-cent refund are all forms of plain, unflavoured milk (including fresh, chilled, and long-life varieties), registered health tonics, and concentrated fruit juices, cordials, or syrups intended for dilution. Additionally, any beverage containers falling outside the 150ml to 3L size limit, as well as wine and spirit casks or pouches, cannot be accepted.

Integral to the design of the scheme was the desire for all Western Australians to be able to participate in the Scheme and get a 10c refund for their eligible containers. The Scheme Coordinator (being Western Australia Return Recycle Renew Ltd) will establish and maintain a state-wide network of 49 designated refund points.
