A fresh guide to Australian blueberries

Blueberries are small, indigo-coloured berries with a sweet and juicy flavour. They are available either fresh in punnets or packaged frozen.

Where are Australian blueberries grown?

The Australian Blueberry crops are grown on deciduous or evergreen shrubs in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania.

How to pick

Choose plump, dark blue coloured blueberries with a firm texture. Most varieties have a natural white/waxy coating, known as bloom. This is a sign of freshness.

How to store

Refrigerate blueberries in their punnets and wash them just before eating.

How to use

Blueberries are delicious as is - top them on your favourite yoghurt or dessert, or add them to a fruit salad. Blitz blueberries in a smoothie, or bake them in a cake or muffin. Make a delicious addition to savoury dishes by sautéeing, or roasting into a sauce or dressing for salads, meat and seafood dishes, or stew blueberries into a compote, jam or chutney to keep in the fridge for up to one week.

Blueberries are in peak season from July to April, however, as they’re grown across Australia in different weather regions, this means that they are available all year round.

  • Blueberries start out green, then ripen into a deep blue or purple colour
  • Blueberries get their colour from a naturally occurring pigment called anthocyanins.
  • Blueberries contain dietary fibre to support a healthy gut*

Food saver tips

  • Use overripe blueberries for baking - they’re the perfect addition to a cake or a pie.
  • Freeze blueberries for up to 12 months. Keep in an airtight container, and pop them straight into fruit juices or smoothies.
  • Turn them into ice pops or ice-cream during summer, or make a delicious frozen cheesecake.
