A fresh guide to Australian strawberries

Strawberries are red, heart-shaped fruits that are juicy and sweet in flavour. They have seeds on the outside, and a green stem with a leafy top.

Where are Australian strawberries grown?

Strawberries grow on low-lying bushes called forbs, and are harvested by hand every couple of days. Depending on the season, where our strawberries come from in Australia varies. In summer, they generally come from Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania, southern Western Australia and the Granite Belt in south-east Queensland. In Winter, the majority are harvested on the Sunshine Coast in south-east Queensland and the Perth region of Western Australia.

How to pick

Choose bright red, firm and juicy-looking berries with the green leafy top still attached.

How to store

Strawberries are highly perishable and should be consumed soon after purchase. Keep ripe strawberries in the fridge for up to five days.

How to use

Strawberries are fantastic on their own. Alternatively, put them on top of pancakes, process into a jam, or bake into a crumble. With savoury dishes, try pairing them with balsamic vinegar, black pepper, basil or rocket.

*When eaten as part of a healthy and balanced diet.

Food saver tips

  • Use softer strawberries in crumbles, cakes, muffins, slices and pancake batters.
  • Process strawberries in a food processor and turn them into a fruit roll-up. This dried chewy snack lasts longer and is great as a dessert topper.
  • Wash and remove tops, then store strawberries in a sealed container lined with baking paper and freeze for up to two months.
