Activated carbon is a black powder, granular or pellet-shaped amorphous carbon with porous structure, also with a fine structure like graphite, but with smaller grains and irregular accumulation between layers. Activated carbon has a large surface area (500 to 1000m2/g) and has strong adsorption properties. It can adsorb gases, liquids or colloidal solids on its surface; for gases and liquids, the mass of the adsorbed material can be close to the mass of the activated carbon itself.
