Hook the ladder onto the cage bars or the cage top where your bird can reach it easily, either standing it up against the side, hanging it on an angle, or laying it flat as a bridge between two perches. Make sure both hooks are firmly attached so it can't slip while your bird climbs. Position it so it doesn't sit directly over food or water bowls where droppings could fall. Check now and then that it is secure and in good condition.

Give a new ladder a wipe before putting it in, and let nervous birds get used to it in their own time, as some birds take a day or two to start using a new addition. Because it is natural wood, expect some nibbling and normal wear over time, and replace it if it becomes chewed through, cracked or soiled.
