Willow Moss (Fontinalis antipyretica)
Willow moss is a long-fronded, flowing aquatic moss known for its soft, weeping appearance. It brings a natural, forest-stream feel to aquascapes and is especially popular in cold or temperate water setups.
Appearance:
Willow moss features long, soft stems with fine, narrow leaves arranged along the sides, resembling willow tree branches. It has a darker green tone and a more relaxed, trailing form compared to other mosses, often swaying gently in the current.
Aquarium Use:
This moss is ideal for attaching to rocks, driftwood, or logs to create a natural, wild look. Its draping growth makes it perfect for simulating underwater forests, tree canopies, or riverbank scenes. It provides excellent cover for fry and shrimp and adds a calming visual flow to any aquascape.
Care Requirements:
Willow moss prefers low to medium light and cooler water temperatures, ideally between 15 and 24°C (59 to 75°F), though it can adapt slightly outside this range. It does not require COâ but will benefit from stable, clean water. A pH of 5.5 to 7.5 is ideal. Growth is slow to moderate.
Additional Notes:
Unlike many tropical mosses, Willow moss thrives in cooler tanks, making it suitable for cold-water species like white cloud mountain minnows or goldfish. It may struggle in high temperatures or strong lighting. Gentle flow helps maintain its graceful, trailing shape without encouraging algae growth.
