Wild birds can add a wonderful atmosphere to your garden. Yet, being wild creatures, it's also very important to provide them with the right food. When it comes to feeding time, try to limit it to a fixed period (between 15-20 minutes) everyday. It's important that birds gather food naturally, and they shouldn't become dependent on your garden.
To attract birds to your garden in the first place, make sure you plant a variety of mixed trees and shrubs. The greater variety you have, the more likely it is that you will attract a variety of species. If your feed attracts a variety of different birds, separate the feed between a few plates to limit competition.
Understanding Bird Body Language
You can learn a lot about birds by watching their body language. A bird that whistles or sings is generally happy, safe and content, whereas one with its head down, body feathers ruffled and tail feathers flared can be feeling quite angry and aggressive. Very loud chatter can also be a sign that a bird wants more attention, as can wing flapping. Some birds will also tap their feet as a sign of dominance over their territory.
