A fresh guide to Australian avocados

Avocados are single-fruit berries, but are often thought of as vegetables due to their savoury taste. They’re oval-shaped, have a buttery texture and a creamy, rich taste. Hass avocado skin transitions from green to a deep purplish-black as it ripens, while Shepards remain glossy green.

Where are avocados grown in Australia?

Avocados are grown in all states of Australia, depending on the variety. Majority of Hass avocados are grown in Queensland, Western Australia and New South Wales, while our Shepard avocados are only grown in Queensland.

Our new season Hass avocados are grown in North Queensland and are tasting great right now, making them ideal for cosy winter meals.

How to pick

When selecting an avocado, be gentle. Avoid squeezing around the middle as this can damage the avocado. Instead, gently press on the neck, close to the stem, to check its ripeness. A ripe avocado will give slightly to gentle pressure, while a firmer one will ripen in a few days.

How to store

Store avocados whole at room temperature until ready to use. Once ripe, store them in the fridge for up to three days. If cut, drizzle with vinegar and lime or lemon juice to prevent discolouring, then keep refrigerated in an airtight container.

How to use

Roughly mash fresh avocado for guacamole, slice it on top of noodles, add to salads, use it as sandwich spread, blend it into a smoothie or whip it into a dessert, such as a chocolate mousse. It’s incredibly versatile!
